Accompaniment to grilled meat.
Bernabeleva vineyards are located around the village of San Martin de Valdeiglesias in the foothills of Gredosthis Garnache is an attempt to express a less known interesting terroir. The aroma is a bit wild in brightness of competing shades: red berries, herbs, spices, graphite or Chinese spices. The taste is smooth, full-bodied and very berry, with thin tannins and a long mineral aftertaste.
History of wine
Grapes are selected in different vineyards for Navaherreros, which differ in soils, and microclimate, and orientation of the slope to the sun. Age of vines - from 40 to 80 years. The harvest of all plots is collected and vinified separately. Fermentation with whole clusters takes place in large wooden, steel and concrete containers, depending on the characteristics of a particular lot of grapes.
In 1923, a famous physician, Vincent Alvarez Villamil bought a plot of land in the foothills of the Sierra de Gredos. He called it Bernabeleva, which means “Bear forest”. In choosing the name he got inspired because these lands were marked by large boulder bears, carved centuries ago, Celtic signs of worship to the goddess of hunting. And only in 2006, two great-grandchildren Vincent made wine in this “bear corner”. Juan Diez Bulnes and Santiago Bulnes Matallana did not come to an empty land: for all these years planted in the 1920s, they carefully looked the vineyards after, as each generation of the family hoped that someday there someone will make wine. As a result, Juan and Santiago today have 35 hectares of old vineyards, some of which are older than 80 years. They are all on slopes at an altitude from 600 to 830 meters above sea level. The Bernabeleva team focuses its efforts on local varieties, as many of them are threatened with oblivion, and in old vineyards of Garnacha, which bought from the neighbors. The winery is advised by a well-known enologist Raul Perez.
